Talk to Your Child About CavitiesTeach your child all about them. | |
|
When the deed is done For some children, though, the dreaded cavity eventually comes. When this happens, there are further discussions you should have. Tell your child in simple, non-frightening terms what she can expect. The dentist will likely take pictures of her mouth (an x ray). Remind her that pictures don’t hurt. The dentist may put a special medicine in her mouth to make it numb, so that the filling won’t hurt. Lastly, the dentist will clean out the cavity and fill it up with a special ‘filling’, so that the cavity doesn’t spread and rot the tooth. | | Encourage good habits There are ways to encourage children to get involved in their own tooth care. A few easy and affordable ways are allowing them to choose their own ADA approved toothbrush and toothpaste. And remember, children often follow what they see modeled, so be a good example and brush your teeth alongside your child.
